Writing Effective Job Advertisements
Use a searchable title
Use the recognised job title rather than internal codes or vague phrases. Candidates commonly search by role, skill and location.
Make the opportunity clear
Open with a short explanation of the role and organisation. Separate essential requirements from skills that can be learned. State the location, work pattern, contract type and pay range wherever possible.
Write inclusively
Use plain language and focus on capabilities genuinely required for the role. Avoid wording that may discourage suitable applicants or imply unlawful discrimination.
Explain the application process
Tell candidates what to submit, the closing date and the likely next step. Use an inbox that is monitored and protect applicant information in line with your privacy obligations.
Manage the campaign
- Respond consistently and keep selection criteria relevant to the job.
- Disable the advertisement when the vacancy closes.
- Do not request unnecessary sensitive documents during early screening.
- Retain applicant information only as long as required for a legitimate recruitment purpose.
